What Helped Me Heal After Separation: Coping with Divorce Stress & Grief One Step at a Time

Divorce isn’t just a legal transition—it’s an emotional upheaval. Whether you’re just beginning to separate or still navigating a pending divorce, the emotional pain can feel overwhelming. One question we recently posed to our community was:

“What is something you did post-separation or during your pending divorce to help alleviate the emotional pain?”

We had the opportunity to interview Tina Higgins, Your Divorce Coach Specialist, for her take on this important question. Tina provides emotional and strategic guidance to clients going through divorce, and her insight is invaluable for anyone feeling lost or stuck in the grief and stress that often accompany this life transition.

Tina’s Personal Answer: I Reached Out for Help

This question is deeply personal for me. I’ve experienced major loss recently, and it brought back memories of what I didn’t do during my own divorce.

The truth is, when I was going through divorce, I didn’t get the help I needed. I ignored my grief & stress. About six months into the process, I attempted suicide. Thankfully, I survived—and thankfully, this time is different.

What changed?

This time, I asked for help. I sought support from professionals trained in grief and emotional healing. I also started a consistent workout routine, which has been vital for managing my mental health. I also gave myself grace on days I felt I needed extra sleep. These things, therapy, movement and sleep, helped me feel like I was reclaiming control.

We don’t often realize how stressed we are during divorce until it’s over. Looking back, I can see all the poor decisions I made under pressure. That kind of stress doesn’t just fade; it can have long-term consequences. And to make smart decisions—about finances, parenting, and legal matters—we have to be emotionally regulated.

Expert Perspective: Divorce Coach Tina Higgins on Coping with Emotional Pain

When we asked Tina Higgins what has helped her clients most with the emotional pain of divorce, she shared:

“The first thing I tell people is: you are not weak for needing help. You’re going through one of the most stressful events of your life—emotionally, financially, and mentally. Getting support isn’t just self-care—it’s the best strategy.”

Tina emphasizes that addressing emotional pain isn’t optional—it’s essential.

“When your emotions are in the driver’s seat, it’s easy to make decisions you’ll later regret. I help my clients pause, breathe, and approach divorce as a business transaction. That doesn’t mean we ignore the emotions—it means we manage them intentionally so we can make clear-headed choices.”

Tina also shared that many people underestimate the ripple effect of emotional distress during divorce:

“People think they’re just dealing with sadness or anger, but it affects your ability to parent, perform at work, and even communicate with your legal team. When you feel supported, you can show up stronger in every area of your life. This process saves thousands of dollars by avoiding unnecessary conflict and undue stress.”

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Divorce is hard. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, numb, or like you’re barely holding it together, I want you to know you’re not alone.

Whether it’s working with a therapist, or hiring a divorce coach, getting help is the most powerful thing you can do—not just for your emotional well-being, but for the outcome of your divorce.
